Over the weekend, Vancouver got pummeled with a lot of snow. The roads became an absolute nightmare for Christmas shoppers, but it was even worse for people who wanted to fly home for the holidays. Sunday saw a lot of cancellations and delays at Vancouver International Airport, but it seems that business has finally returned to normal at YVR. For now.
The operational crews have been working around the clock to keep ice off the runways and taxiways, but there are still some minor delays, particularly for domestic flights. This is for both departures and arrivals, resulting in quite a few re-bookings of cancelled holiday flights.
The situation does not appear to be getting much better, unfortunately, as the forecast calls for more snow in the next few days. We'll have a white Christmas, but the airport work crews will need to significantly ramp up their efforts if they hope to minimize any further delays and cancellations. Keep an eye on YVR.ca if you have any friends or family flying in (or out) in the next few days.
