Who Will Captain the Canucks Now?

naslund-captain.jpg

You've surely heard the news by now. Markus Naslund is no longer a Canuck. He just inked a two-year deal with the New York Rangers worth about $8 million. This ends a long era where the Swede wore the "C" on his shoulder for our hometown hockey team.

It's obvious that the Canucks are going through a rebuilding process and saying goodbye to Markus Naslund is just one step that the team has taken in that direction. The question now, is who is going to fill that leadership void? Trevor Linden is effectively retired and it's unlikely that they will make Roberto Luongo the captain of the team.

Should we be looking to free agent signings -- former NYR captain Jaromir Jagr is still available -- for a new team captain, or should we be looking within? Some pundits are saying that there are some good candidates on the team already that we should be considering, like Ryan Kesler and Willie MItchell. Whatever the case, it will prove to be an interesting and sobering season for Vancouver hockey next year.
