Whitecaps FC Going MLS with Steve Nash?

stevenash-whitecaps.jpg

Even though they're still waiting on a new waterfront stadium near Gastown, the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team could be moving into the big leagues soon, thanks to substantial backing from BC's own Steve Nash. You probably know Nash better for his NBA exploits, but the basketball player is leading a charge to take the Whitecaps Football Club (FC) to Major League Soccer (MLS).

The MLS currently has room for two new expansion franchises, and Steve Nash wants Vancouver to occupy one of those slots. Steve Nash is passionate about soccer and, in his own words, his "commitment to the community is well aligned with the Whitecaps vision."

It is also said that Vancouver Canucks' owner Francesco Aquilini could also be interested in backing a Vancouver MLS franchise. If their bid is successful, the Whitecaps would join Major League Soccer for the 2011 season.
