What's Happening with the Aquarium Expansion?

vanaqua1.jpg

The Vancouver Aquarium is a great place for families to learn about all sorts of marine life and have a great time doing it. It's there we witnessed the birth of a new baby beluga. It's there that we saw a couple of adorable sea otters holding hands. And it's there that you can come within arm's reach of a sloth dangling in a rainforest. The place is really quite remarkable.

Given all of these great things, the public was resoundingly positive when it came to funding an $80 million plan to expand the popular facility in Stanley Park. The proposal was put forth in 2006 and it got an 89% public approval rating. Some things started to get into action, but those plans may soon come to a screeching halt.

The original plan called for $80 million in public money, but more recent estimates have the total cost soaring to the $120 million range. Can the public still be expected to pick up the extra $40 million tab? And let's not forget about the trees and other acreage that need to be cleared to make room for the new exhibits.

As such, the newly elected Vancouver Park Board is looking for a update very soon. The plans have been approved a long time ago, but the scope has changed.
