What's Going on with BC Place Stadium?

bcplacestadium-roof.jpg

As I'm sure you already know, BC Place Stadium is going to serve as the venue for both the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games here in Vancouver. You probably also know that the roof on the aging stadium is not in the best of conditions, especially after getting torn up by the storms some time back. The roof needs to be replaced.

The trouble is that "sports fans and taxpayers shouldn't expect a quick decision from the provincial government about whether BC Place Stadium in Vancouver will get a new, high tech roof.". The decision needs to come soon, but it seems that the government is taking its sweet time to weigh the options. The BC Cabinet could opt to replace the existing inflatable roof for about $20 million. This is the more cost efficient option (at least in the short term).

The alternative would be a retractable roof, not unlike the ones we've seen at other baseball and football stadiums across North America. The trouble is that this high tech roof comes in at 10 times the cost of the inflatable covering. Replacing the roof is a complex issue, to be sure. Tourism and Sports Minister Stan Hagen says that the decision probably will not be made today in cabinet, even if the topic were to come up.

What do you think? Inflatable or retractable?
