Weekend Camping Trips from Vancouver #4: Porpoise Bay

This is the fourth in a series of posts on weekend camping trips you can take from Vancouver. All the camping trips listed will be to sites within a day's drive of the city, and all will be at provincial campgrounds. If there's a particular site you'd like reviewed, please reply with a comment to this post!

Porpoise Bay is located on the Sunshine Coast, only 4km north of Sechelt. To get there from Vancouver, take the ferry from Horeshoe Bay to Langdale, then follow the signs to Sechelt. The total trip from downtown Vancouver, including the ferry ride, is only about 2 hours.

IMG_4547.JPGPorpoise Bay has one main feature going for it: sand beaches. They're a rarity at BC campgrounds, but you'll find them here. It's also a great place to camp if you're a kayaker planning on exploring the Sechelt inlet.

The main downfall of Porpoise Bay is that campfires are not allowed at individual campsites because of a clean air policy. They're only allowed at 3 communal firepits. To me, an evening spent by the campfire is the best part about camping, so this is a pretty serious factor against Porpoise Bay for me.

There's a good washroom facility at Porpoise Bay, with running water, flush toilets, and hot showers. There is running water at taps throughout the park.

You can learn more about Porpoise Bay, or make reservations here.
