VPD Buys 70 More Tasers, Despite Recent Controversy

taser.jpg

You've surely heard about (and seen the video of) the taser-related death of Robert Dziekanski at the Vancouver International Airport. The story has made international news and has stirred up all sorts of controversy around the RCMP and their use of the supposed non-lethal weapon. Despite the negative backlash, the Vancouver Police Department has just placed an order for 70 more tasers.

This would bring the total taser count in the VPD up to 110, providing enough stun guns to outfit every taser-trained officer. "The reason we put this request in," said Constable Tim Fanning, "i so that there's more accountability so each Taser is issued to the officers that are trained, so that they have their own personal issue rather than going into a pool."

The new tasers, produced by an Arizona-based company, are expected to arrive next month.
