VPD Approves Purchase of Armoured Rescue Vehicle

lencobearcat.jpg

The Vancouver Police Department has a good variety of vehicles at its disposal, but none are quite as intimidating as what they are considering today. The VPD is "beefing up its fleet" with the pending additoin of an armoured rescue vehicle. This armoured car can act as a mobile ballistic shield and can be used under a variety of scenarios. Officers can go where they couldn't go safely before.

The cost of one of these vehicles is in the neighbourhood of $300,000 and the City of Vancouver has already approved funding for $345,000. Shown above is the Lenco "BearCat" armoured vehicle, which is used by some American cities like Los Angeles and New York. A decision has not yet been made, but the BearCat is one of the options that the Vancouver Police Department is considering.

"It's not a tank, it's a tool," said VPD Inspector Tony Zanatta. "It's simply that. It's a shield, it's a ballistic shield that's mobile."
