VPD: 11 Down, 189 to Go

vpd-newrecruit.jpg

On Wednesday, the Vancouver Police Department got that much closer to their goal of adding 200 new members before the start of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. It's a small step, but it's one that's in the right direction.

Eleven new recruits were sworn in yesterday and they are all now proud members of the VPD. The Vancouver Police Department could have fulfilled their goal with this most recent wave of applicants, because the eleven recruits were chosen from about 220 applicants! Only about five percent of applicants are ultimately accepted by the force, because the other 95% are either not suitable or not qualified.

Despite the low unemployment rate and the high housing costs in Vancouver, the department still manages to attract qualified applicants. The challenges and opportunities available in a city like Vancouver are a strong draw, according to Deputy Chief Bob Rolls. "There is no way you can get the same variety of opportunities" in a smaller department, Rolls said.
