Visible Minorities Are Now The Majority

minority.jpg

We pride ourselves in being a multicultural city and now the latest statistics coming out of the census data released today confirms our multiculturalism. As it turns out, you're not longer in the minority if you happen to be a visible minority. As counterintuitive as it may sound, visitor minorities are no in the majority in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond.

In Vancouver, 51% of the population is a visible minority, whereas 55.4% of Burnaby residents and 65.1% of the registered Richmond population are visible minorities. Taking the Metro Vancouver as a whole, approximately four in 10 belonged to a visible minority group. This is further evidenced by the various festivals and celebrations that take place in this city from time to time, like Chinese New Year and the festivities surrouding the restored Gur Sikh Temple in Abbotsford last year.

The census metropolitan area of Vancouver was home to the "second highest proportion of visible minorities among all census metropolitan areas," according to Stats Canada. "Of Vancouver CMA's 2.1 million residents, 875,300 belonged to a visible minority group in 2006, up 20.6% from 725,700 in 2001."
