Victoria's Simon Whitfield Wins Vancouver's World Cup Triathlon

simon_whitfield.jpgCongratulations to fellow BC'r Simon for his big win on Sunday who must have felt right at home competing in the wind and rain. It was definitely not the best of days weather-wise for this inaugural event.

Simon's World Cup win was even more impressive when you consider he almost didn't show up for the event as his wife is due to go in labour at any moment. Nice of junior to hang in there long enough for Daddy to win his race.

"I'm delighted today. Those other guys race a little more then I do and they showed that great fitness today. The crowd definitely got me through it today," said the expecting father. "My better half is pregnant and expecting any day. I almost didn't come to the race. I arrived on the 9 o'clock ferry and I’m heading home right now. I need to be there when the little guy shows up."

    Hey Simon.

I watched you win the Olympic Gold in 2000. It was the most amazing race and ever since I have wanted to do a triathlon. I am now 19 and I am just dying to do a triathlon. Unfortunately, I have had 2 serious injuries (2 complete ACL tears on the same knee) in the last year and a half that have resulted in 2 separate knee surgeries. I am currently 3.5 months post-op and am finally starting to get back into running and things that I love to do. Since this is my second surgery, things are taking longer. But bascially I want to know how to train for such an event and the equipment (I am a student and don't have much extra money to get a special bike or a wetsuit or anything). How did you get into this sport? And how can I get myself into great shape.

Like you, I pride myself in my sprint finishes. I have been running since I was a little girl and I always have that extra gas in the tank to make a great finish. I have also been swimming since I was little, I am now a lifeguard. I just have never done much swimming training, just the casual trip to the pool. I usually swim 1km. As for biking, I have never really trained for a bike race, but I have done many workouts on the bike.

    Where do I start??

p.s. I would like to thank you for really inspiring me to do something like this. I have 2 goals right now. I want to compete on triathlons and one day, I want to complete a marathon.
