VANOC's Furlong: Everything is going according to plan

The 2010 Winter Olympics are just around the corner, yet we still see long stretches of Cambie street all torn up and there are still venues that need to be renovated and updated in time for the games. We've been bombarded with issues of funding and so on, but it seems that everything is peachy-keen with the official Olympic organizers.

John Furlong and the rest of the VANOC team say that they are on track with all of their goals. In fact, there are several areas where they believe they are ahead of the game. The first quarterly report of the next fiscal year was released earlier today and it provides info like the total of $427.9 million spent on construction-related bills and the increase in its construction contingency fund by $250,000 to $27.05 million.

Sponsorship is well ahead of expectations. VANOC was hoping to get $65 million in domestic sponsorship this year, but they actually raised $102.5 million. A total of $691 million in corporate sponsorships has been raised since Vancouver won the games, which represents over 90% of their overall target.

Several venues in Whistler have also been completed, including the Whistler Sliding Centre, Whistler Olympic Park Nordic venues, and alpine runs at Whistler Creekside.
