VANOC Signs Agreement with United Nations Environment Program

whistler-grizzly.jpg

The impact on the environment from such a major event as the Olympic Games is undeniable. Even so, the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee wants to be as green as possible with the upcoming 2010 Olympics, and this dedication extends to before, during, and after the two-week event. As such, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic Games has signed an agreement with the United Nations Environment Program.

They say that they want to raise awareness about the environment and they hope that the efforts in place for 2010 Games will "inspire sustainable action around the world." What strategies, specifically, are involved were not released.

By contrast, Western Canada Wilderness Committee's Joe Foy says that the "massive transportation infrastructure built for a few days of the Olympics will increase greenhouse gas emissions long after the Games have come and gone." Habitat for the grizzly bear, for example, will be permanently destroyed to make space for the legacy trails in Whistler.
