VANOC: Olympic Ticket Sales Will Be Fair

vanoc-tix.jpg

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing were quite the spectacle and they could point toward what we should be expecting when the 2010 Winter Olympics roll into Vancouver and Whistler in less than two years. As you know, there will definitely be a limited number of seats at each event, but VANOC is assuring us that the ticket-buying process will be designed in the interest of fairness.

Organizers of the games say that there will be no need to camp out, jam phone lines, or hog bandwidth through the website. That's because when the ticket application process opens on October 3, it will be a lengthy proposition and it won't be about "who gets there first... who can get on the internet or phone lines the quickest, " according to Caley Denton, vice-president of ticketing and consumer marketing.

Instead, a lottery will be used if requests exceed tickets. Requests for specific events in each price category will be accepted between October 3 and November 7. Orders will be filled by early December and seating assignments given in August 2009. You won't be able to pay with an Amex or Mastercard, however, as Visa is the exclusive credit card of the games. Money orders and cheques will also be expected.

Thirty percent of seats are being set aside for athletes, their families, national Olympic committees, international sport federations, sponsors and media.
