Vancouver's Lululemon and NowPublic Score Big

lululemon.jpgUpdating a previous post about Lululemon's stock IPO - this just in...Lululemon is a HOT stock!! Lululemon's stock began trading on the NASDAQ (LULU) and TSX (LLL) on Friday and before this Vancouver yoga stock could break a sweat it had already soared 50% to $28+ after one day of trading. Congratulations to founder Chip Wilson who saw his own shares in the company spike to a 'paper-value' in excess of $500+ million. An impressive IPO to say the least for this Vancouver-born clothing shop, especially considering that the markets are currently experiencing a down-turn.

This is exactly the kind of growth story I love to see - a foreign (Canadian) company whose initial foray into the US has been greeted with wild excitement by affluent urban tastemakers. Walk into any yoga class in Chicago or New York and you’ll see women and men of all ages going into downward dog adorned with lululemon’s distinct omega-esque logo. It’s just a matter of time before this sight spreads to the rest of the country. - seekingalpha.com

nowpublic.jpgIn other local corporate news, Vancouver internet start-up NowPublic.com has just closed another round of funding to the tune of $10.6 million. NowPublic is a citizen journalism web site that was recently featured in Time Magazine as one of their Top 50 web sites. NowPublic's head offices are in Gastown.

NowPublic, based in Vancouver, says it now has 118,000 contributing journalists, more than the 50,000 or so journalists at a competing site, OhmyNews.
