Vancouver WISH Women's Shelter Gets New Home

womenshelter.jpg

Vancouver's Downtown Eastside has a notoriously bad reputation, but several organizations and government agencies are working hard to rectify the area's issues. For example, we have the Insite safe injection site to help with the drug addiction problem.

Another issue has to be the rampant prostitution, so it's great to see that the WISH Society has finally getting its own home. For more than 20 years, the WISH Women's Shelter worked out of a "gritty" Vancouver church, but it is now getting its own brand-new space in the Downtown Eastside. The WISH Society's drop-in centre once helped the victims of a notorious BC serial killer. I think we all know who I'm talking about.

The new wellness centre is a giant step in the right direction, helping dozens of women who live and work in the Downtown Eastside. "The biggest difference is that it's purpose-built," said WISH executive director Kate Gibson. "What you need is where you need it,"
