Vancouver Sun Run: All sun, no snow!

IMG_0658.JPG

With the weather report calling for possibilities of flurries, and a recent record of ridiculously unseasonable weather, I was a little worried I'd be running the Sun Run today up to my ankles in snow. That, combined with the fact that the temperature was a whopping 1.2 degrees when I started my walk down to the Georgia Street starting line meant I packed on one too many layers of fleece.

The first lesson I learned this morning is that a crowd of 59,000 people (yes, there were a record 59,197 participants in the Sun Run this year) generates a lot of heat -- even before they start to run.

The second lesson is that's it's amazing what the human body is capable of. IMG_0661.JPGThe fastest runner, a Kenyan athlete, completed the 10K run in under 30 minutes. I think at 30 minutes in I was at kilometre three. But even that is a testament to what the body is capable of -- that it can rise to the occasion of a 10K run (or run/walk, as the case may be), after months of winter and many days spent glued to a computer, and virtually no training at all.

In the end, I completed the Sun Run in about an hour and a half, a thirty-minute improvement over my first attempt two years ago, when I walked the entire route. Full race coverage and results will appear in tomorrow's Vancouver Sun.
