Vancouver Strike Talks Stagnant, Delta Close to Deal

01sullivan.jpg

The Vancouver city workers strike has been going on for some time now and it seems like talks are going nowhere. There's no garbage pickup for residential areas. There's no garbage pickup for public trash cans. The community centres and city-run swimming pools are closed. You can't even go to the local library to pick out a summer read, because those workers are on strike too. Worst of all, it sounds like "Vancouver [is] not even at bargaining table." We could be in for the long haul.

By stark contrast, Delta has reportedly reached a tentative agreement with its civic workers. All they need is for the 800 members of CUPE 454 to vote on the agreement this Wednesday. Richmond has already reached a deal previously.

CUPE 454 President Darryl Robison said it is based on the Richmond settlement with regard to a five-year plan and there is an increase in wage over that time. He said he is puzzled that Vancouver is having so much trouble coming up with a deal with its city workers. Robison said the Richmond deal meets the requirements that Vancouver Sam Sullivan has said he wanted, which were not to negotiate during an election period and to provide labour peace through the 2010 Olympics.
