Vancouver Prioritized for Mobile 911 Support

911call.jpg

Unlike many other western countries, Canada does not really have proper 911 support for mobile phone users. Elsewhere, when someone calls for emergency services, the dispatcher is able to use cell tower triangulation and other technology to determine the caller's relatively precise location. This is not yet in place for Canada.

With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games just around the corner, there is a significant push to upgrade the 911 emergency system in time for the games. During the Olympics, there will surely be an increase in the number of emergency calls made, especially from cell phones, and the city needs to be prepared for this.

Over in Ottawa, they mandated that mobile phone firms in Canada need to start this 911 upgrade by February 2010, but Vancouver (and British Columbia) should be pushed to the top of this priority list. The potential consequences of a failed 911 system can be disastrous.
