Vancouver Police Department Officially Announces New Chief

vpd-jimchu.jpg

It's not quite the same as winning Canadian Idol, but Deputy Chief Jim Chu has a lot to be proud of. He was officially named as the new Vancouver Police Department Chief this morning, taking over the post that was held by outgoing top dog Jamie Graham. This assignment has been confirmed both by Graham and Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan.

Graham will continue to serve at the top of the ladder until August, at which time Chu will assume the duties of being the top cop in Vancouver. Chu's current assignment is within the Operations Support Division. He's been working primarily with gangs, drugs, tactical support, and emergency response. Chu has also been involved in police planning for the 2010 Olympic Games.

Chu's been around the block. A veteran of 28 years, he has been credited "with keeping an entire intersection at bay during the Stanley Cup riots of 1994." Jim Chu, who moved to Vancouver from Shanghai when he was three years old, is also Canada's first major city Chinese-Canadian police chief.
