Vancouver Outside Workers: Give Us Signing Bonus or Give Us Death

vanstrike-cityhall.jpg

The CBC is reporting that Vancouver's outside workers are not prepared to end their strike under the terms of the agreement include a signing bonus.

CUPE Local 1004, which represents nearly 2000 members, posted this bargaining update on its website yesterday, going on to say that as the strike goes on, "our demands and costs to the employer will go up. That means issues that were set aside may go back on the table and we have notified the employer there will be a signing bonus as part of the return to work agreement."

The last time the two sides got together for a meeting was a full 12 days ago, clearly indicating that talks have become stagnant. It seems that neither side is willing to budge, and based on this most recent gesture/request by the union, it seems that the two sides are moving even further apart.

This strike could very well go on for "several months" as some analysts are beginning to predict. Union president Mike Jackson did note, however, that any signing bonus would probably not come close to what workers have already lost in wages.
