Vancouver Olympics Need More French

inukshuklogo.jpg

Parlez-vous francais?

Canada has two official languages, so there is an increasing push to make the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver a little more bilingual. I don't find too many people around the Vancouver area who use French as their primary language, but we also have to recognize that these Winter Games are not only being hosted by Vancouver, but by Canada as a whole.

As a result, the Commissioner of Official Languages Graham Fraser said that more resources need to be allocated to translation of Olympic materials, signage, and other items where the French side is a little lacking. Moreover, Fraser said that they need to hire more bilingual volunteers and staff.

The Olympics are an international affair, so it will clearly be useful to have as many languages available as possible, but the push toward more French content is probably taken a priority.
