We all know that Vancouver is a multicultural city and that's part of the town's appeal. Driving around town, you get treated to all sorts of international cuisine, ranging from sushi to gyros, samosas to fajitas. The same can be said about all the cultural events that we get to enjoy, like Chinese New Year. With so many different cultures in our city, one study looked to determine which culture was the most concentrated.
For example, there is a significant East Indian community near Main and 49th, whereas Commercial Drive is largely populated by people with Greek and Italian heritage. But neither of those areas has the most cultural concentration. Instead, Jewish people are the most concentrated, largely living in the Oak and 41st area near Oakridge Mall.
The Multiculturalism on the Ground study commissioned by Heritage Canada found that the Jewish community "lives in a tight cluster" and this is because a large proportion of Orthodox Jewish people "want to be close to their synagogue." The Iranian community on the North Shore are the second most concentrated group.
While the Chinese community is the largest, it is fairly spread out across several neighborhoods. As such, it cam up as the fourth on the list.
