Vancouver Could Benefit from Global Warming

cargoship.jpg

Here's a strange side effect for you. While Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio warn us against greenhouse gases and global warming, a different side of the coin is saying that the melting Arctic ice caps would actually prove to be profitable for cities like Vancouver.

According to a recent report by the National Post, the ice melting up north could open up the Northwest Passage, effectively allowing cargo ships -- like the one shown above -- to take that route instead of the Panama Canal. This would cut about 9,000 kilometres off their journey. This makes shipping items more efficient and less expensive.

Sending those cargo ships from Vancouver to Northern Europe, Africa, and even the East coast of North America could be achieved a lot easier through the Northwest Passage. At this time, most ships cannot take that route because of the ice and other dangers. The only regular service to make it through the Northwest Passage currently are "some expedition cruise ships," said Joseph Spears of Horseshoe Bay Marine Group.
