Vancouver Convention Centre Getting Living Roof

greenroof.jpg

Vancouver is going green in more ways than one and it's getting the full backing of the provincial government.

The new Vancouver Convention Centre will come with at least one very distinctive future when it is complete about a year from now. As it turns out, the new Convention Centre will be outfitted with what is known as a green "living" roof. Premier Gordon Campbell said that this roof will be just as iconic as the pillow dome of BC Place Stadium or the globe of the Telus World of Science.

“The living roof … is going to be something that is recognized around the world,” said Premier Campbell. The roof will be covered in 2.5 hectares of plants, further emphasizing our city's dedication to the environment and green spaces. Amidst the concrete jungle will be a nature-inspired refuge for trade show attendees.

“There are more living plants on the roof of the Vancouver Convention Centre than flowers in all of Vancouver’s 200 parks.” The green roof also acts as an insulator, keeping the building cool in the summer and warmer in the winter.
