Vancouver City Strike: Day 53 (and Counting)

It's hard to believe, but we are nearly two whole months in the civic strike and despite some inklings of hope, there doesn't appear to be any movement on either side of the bargaining table. Living on strike pay is pretty hard and it's starting to get to some Vancouver picketers.

Charlene Cranton recently spoke with CTV British Columbia, saying that "times are getting tough out here. It's getting stressful." She says that she is finding herself very close to financial trouble. Many picketers have school-aged children, so all the back-to-school expenses are starting to rack up as well, in addition to the usual onslaught of mortgage payments, utility bills, and the like.

Strike pay is only about $250 a week, but some employees who are on contract aren't earning any strike pay at all. The strike has lost its humour, despite this video which recently found its way onto YouTube.
