Vancouver Board Spares Hollow Tree (For Now)

hollowtree1.jpg

It's a Vancouver landmark and it's one that many people would be sad to see go. It's also a rather hefty safety hazard and it may not necessarily be safe to leave it in place, especially with tourists walking in and around it on a daily basis. The last thing the city wants is a lawsuit.

Even so, the Vancouver city board has decided to spare the life of the Hollow Tree in Stanley Park for the time being. The cedar tree is about a thousand years old and it was earmarked for destruction only a short while ago. They were going to chop it down along with 70 other trees in Queen Elizabeth Park. The schedule called for the Hollow Tree to go down before Canada Day long weekend.

Then the city faced strong opposition and now the park board has voted "to delay the removal for 150 days." This doesn't mean that the tree is going to stay there, but they are going to re-evaluate the possible options.
