Vancouver Aquarium's Nyac Sea Otter Dies

By now, you've surely seen the video on YouTube that features a couple of sea otters holding hands at the Vancouver Aquarium. The video has now been watched by over 11 million people, making it one of the biggest Internet sensations in recent memory. Unfortunately, one of the video's stars has now passed on.

Nyac was originally rescued from the infamous 1989 Exxon Valdex oil spill off the coast of Alaska. She was six months old at the time, too young to fend for yourself. As a result, she was rehabilitated at Vancouver Aquarium and has spent the majority of her 20-year-old life under the care of the Aquarium staff. She has entertained and educated countless visitors, but she is no longer with us.

Nyac is one of the longest surviving otters in capitivity. Her health started to deteriorate in July and she finally succumbed to leukemia recently. "Her life has been an amazing journey for all of us to share," said Clint Wright, senior vice-president of aquarium operations and planning. Here is the video, in case you want to see it one last time.
