Vancouver Aquarium Ready for Expansion?

pacdol.jpg

Amendments to a standing bylaw about the acquisition of new mammals, including the Pacific White Sided Dolphins, has activists worried.

The amendments allow the aquarium to bring in injured or distressed animals with the idea of rehabilitation and possible release. Most activists feel doubtful about any release programs actually occurring.

However, the aquarium has had a longstanding program where they rescue and rehabilitate seals and the majority of them have been released.

Nightingale is quoted stating that he would like to see at least seven dolphins living in the aquarium, but has hopes that most would be born in captivity.

I feel a bit torn about the Aquarium. I think it does a fantastic job in educating the public about our oceans. It is NOT Seaworld. I feel a tad guilty about cetaceans in captivity, but again the chance to see them up close is a wonderful thing. My children LOVE the place and I can see my son having a long term interest in marine life thanks to places like the Vancouver Aquarium.

I think as long as this bylaw is not abused the facility can continue to do great work and support the expansions.
