Vancouver and Sochi To Share Olympic Equipment

handshakesochi.jpg

It's quite an expensive endeavor to host the Olympic games. You have to build new venues, develop new infrastructure, hire new staff... it all gets pretty pricey. It was with this in mind that the Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) forged a deal with their equivalents in Sochi, Russia, the town that will be hosting the 2014 Olympics.

Under the agreement, some of the custom equipment, tools, backdrops and even staff could get shipped off to Sochi after they have completed their duties in Vancouver 2010. This equipment could then be used for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Such a cooperation has never been done in the Olympics before. Traditionally, items like these are bought new every time a city is awarded the Games.

"If we were buying the equipment together, it would be a far better proposition," said John Furlong. "Why not work out a way to move some of that to a place where it's got an immediate use. Put it on a container and that way the economics is good for us, they're good for them and also, the work is done."
