We all know that we should take better care of the planet, but it's hard giving up our modern conveniences. Even though the government hasn't laid down any hard restrictions, Vancity Savings Credit Union has taken it upon itself to be carbon neutral. And yes, the bank has achieved it, representing the first financial institution in North America to achieve this feat.
Vancity has reached their goal of carbon neutrality -- which means that any carbon emissions created by Vancity are now equal to emissions reduced or offset elsewhere -- about 20 months ahead of schedule. Vancity CEO Tamara Vrooman and environmentalist Dr. David Suzuki couldn't be happier.
"I can now say, 'Look, don't give me that argument that it can't be done. Vancity has done it.' Without regulations, without government breathing down your backs, this company has decided that it's the right thing to do."
In the last 10 years, Vancity has cut its energy use by 50 percent, saving $2 million.
