University Golf Course Safe Until 2033

golf.jpg

It was announced today that the Musqueam Band will keep the land as a golf course until 2033 if the land is transferred over to them. Ending the fear of development for the many patrons of the club.

This was based on a 'covenant' between the Provincial Government and UBC when the land was sold to the University for $11 million dollars. It was agreed that the land would be used solely as a golf course. And the First Nations Band have agreed to uphold this until 2033.

The choice of year is thought to be related to the fact that in the year before (2032) the band is set to take over the Shaughnessy Gold and Country Club.

The Vancouver Sun quotes Musqueam band manager Ken McGregor as stating that he cannot comment on the future plans after that, however, housing is apparently a cause for concern for the band.

I am not a golfer, but have enjoyed events at both clubs and they are truly beautiful and while people feel that only the 'elite' get to enjoy the land....I would rather see a gem like these courses there than more condo's. However, I would also like the band to be able to develop their own land to meet their needs too. It is a tough situation. Especially with the price and demand of real estate.
