Tiqa is Vancouver Aquarium's Baby Beluga

babybeluga-tiqa.jpg

Too bad they didn't choose my suggestion.

As you already know, the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park welcomed a new baby beluga to the family during the summer and the calf went unnamed up until now. After its health stabilized and the on-site animal keepers were confident that the young one would be able to survive (whales born in captivity have a high rate of death in early life), the Vancouver Aquarium opened a contest to name the calf.

About 5,500 response came pouring through its website and then the finalists were announced a short while back. Aquarium members were invited to vote for their favorite and the winning name is Tiqa. The suggested name comes from a six-year-old Hannah McDonald of England. She was able to watch the birth of the baby beluga over the Internet less than a week before moving to the city.

So, what's in a name? Tiqa is an acronym: Tuesday (day of the week when the calf was born); Imaq, her father; Qila, her mother; and Aurora, her grandmother.
