The Night for All Souls

allsouls.jpg

Halloween might not be until this Friday, but events are already starting to take place all around the city. For example, a group of people got together at a Vancouver cemetery to light candles for their dead relatives and dearly department friends. They also burned Chinese joss paper "so their ancestors would flourish in the next world."

This all went down at the Mountain View Cemetery on Saturday Night for what the attendees called The Night for All Souls. It wasn't a religious experience, per se, but the evening was filled with spiritual rituals that could "help the more than 1,000 people who attended develop more meaningful relationships with their deceased loved ones."

While Halloween now brings up images of children going door to door for candy and grown-ups attending alcohol-infused parties, the Night for All Souls was an attempt, according to coordinator Paula Jardine, to "bring out the deeper traditions of Halloween."
