The Hollow Tree is Coming Down

hollowtree.jpg

If you don't have a picture of yourself next to the Hollow Tree in Stanley Park yet, I suggest you get there soon. That's because the famous Vancouver landmark is going to be cut down, as voted by the city's parks board last night. The stump, located in Stanley Park, is 1,000 years old and isn't really a full tree anymore anyways. Even so, it has attracted the attention of tourists and locals like for a number of years.

The primary reason for chopping down the Hollow Tree is for safety concerns. After the recent storm damage fractured the remains of the red cedar, it started to pose a significant hazard to the locals and tourists who "flock to it for photos."

They had hoped to keep the tree there, but an engineering report said that they could only find one way to keep the tree standing and this was with a "cumbersome girdle of external supports that both the board and tree fans agreed was grotesque."
