The GVRD is Dead, Long Live Metro Vancouver

gvrdlogo.gif

The CBC is reporting that the Greater Vancouver Regional District (abbreviated GVRD) will be changing its name to Metro Vancouver, officially coming into effectin September at the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual convention.

The thinking behind this re-branding is that people outside of British Columbia typically don't recognize what a "regional district" really is and the people supporting the name change feel that outsiders may consider the GVRD to be farmland. As residents here, we know that isn't exactly true. In fact, Greater Vancouver is the third largest metropolitan area as well as the best city in the country.

By moving to "Metro Vancouver", they immediately tell national and international diplomats that we are a large and diverse city. The term "metro" is used around the world to designate larger, mostly urban areas.

I don't know about you, but when I think Metro, I think of the Metro newspaper.
