Swim. Bike. Run. Triathletes Take Over Van City

triathlon_2007One would think given how friendly our city is for outdoor sports of all kinds, that we would be hosting world-class triathlon competitions on an annual basis. Surprisingly, Vancouver hasn't hosted a World Cup level triathlon competition since 1991 but as of today (June 10), that finally changes. If you have not ventured out just yet, be aware that there will be road closures galore, the World Cup will affect traffic and parking in the area between Stanley Park and Burrard Street, and between Robson Street and English Bay. It will also affect traffic on Burrard Street from the Burrard Street Bridge to 4th Avenue. Road closures will be in affect at different times of the day and some bus routes will be affected.

This is a pretty big event as it is one of only three North American World Cup competitions to be held this year. Triathletes of all skill levels will take part, but the official competition will feature 12 Canadian professionals who will take on an international field of triathletes who are all jockeying to improve their position to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing for their respective countries. Keep an eye out for local favourites, Lauren Groves (Vancouver) and Jill Savege (Penticton) who will be competing in the Womens field against 38 others. Simon Whitfield (Victoria), Brent McMahon (Victoria) and Andrew McCartney (Victoria) round out the clan from B.C. on the Mens side who will compete against 61 other professionals.
