Subtle Security for 2010 Games

yvrwelcome.jpg

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games are going to be a rather massive international event, so it's not surprising that good security is near the top of the priority list for VANOC and everyone else involved with the upcoming games. As it turns out, though, the security won't be quite as "in your face" as some people may expect it to be.

According to Bud Mercer, RCMP Assistant Commissioner, the security for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games will be "subtle." The officers will be there and there will be initiatives in place for the safety of everyone involved, but you may not have to go through an invasive screening process before arriving at the various venues. Further still, Mercer says that the security budget will be under one billion dollars.

That figure is still a lot higher than the reported $175 million budget from the beginning, but Assistant Commissioner Mercer found that number to be too low when he took the post in fall 2007. In addition to the RCMP, Olympic security forces will include municipal police departments, the military, border services officials, and private security.
