Student Alert System Installed At SFU

sms.jpg

You may have heard about the recent bomb threats at UBC and how it stirred up all sorts of discussion as to how safe would a university campus be in the face of an actual explosive attack. Simon Fraser University is not going to sit idly by, because the school on the hill has installed "a new messaging system [that] will alert students and staff quickly via text and instant messages."

Getting the word out as quickly and efficiently as possible is of paramount importance, so considering that nearly everyone on campus will either be at a computer or be equipped with a cell phone, it only makes sense that this alert system capitalizes on SMS and IM. In the face of a threat, everyone can be notified almost instantaneously.

Steve Ray, SFU spokesperson, says that the launch of this system is unrelated to the recent events at UBC. SFU has been working on this mass-notification system for about a year now. A similar strategy is being developed for UBC, but has not yet launched.
