SkyTrain Extension and Hybrid Translink Buses

skytrain.jpg

Looks like there are some rather monumental changes happening in the public transportation world in Vancouver.

First, CKNW is reporting that all replacement and expansion Translink buses, starting next year, will be hybrids. Vancouver is known for being one of the most environmentally-friendly cities in North America and this is further to that dedication. "Translink directors approved nearly $35 million dollars in environmental upgrades to the fleet this morning." This money will come from Translink's capital budget and not from the increased revenue from the recent rate hike.

Second, the Globe and Mail has learned that Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan has approved a $1 million study by Translink on extended the rapid transit SkyTrain line about 12 kilometres along Broadway Avenue to Granville Street, and then eventually out to UBC. This would likely extend from the existing Millennium Line which currently terminates at the VCC Campus near Clark Drive and Great Northern Way. Sullivan says that he would like this project to run underground, unlike the current dig-and-cover strategy for the RAV Line that has been ravaging Cambie Street businesses.
