Sending Vancouver Trash to Washington State

garbagebags.jpg

As our city continues to grow, we will continue to have more and more garbage. Where is all this trash supposed to go? Well, the board of Metro Vancouver has voted to send some of your throw-aways to Washington State, assuming that the provincial government gives them the go-ahead. Yes, you read that correctly: we want to ship our trash to the States.

Up until now, the city's garbage has been sent to a dump in Cache Creek and this is where we've been sending our trash for almost 20 years. As the Cache Creek landfill is expected to be completely full by 2010, Metro Vancouver officials have to start looking at alternatives. They originally wanted to find another site in the Interior, but nothing has worked out.

Sending the garbage to Washington is a "short-term solution" and they hope to burn the garbage in the future to generate power.
