Say Goodbye to Downtown Dumpsters

dumpster.jpg

That's the proposal being put forth by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association. They want to rid the alleys of those metal monstrosities, because the dumpsters appear to be at the root of several problems plaguing the downtown core.

Typically, it is near dumpsters that you find issues like disorderly behaviour and vandalism, as well as filthy and unsafe conditions. They also cite the blockage of lanes and line of sight obstructions. According to their "Downtown Ambassadors", the people who walk around in red jackets, more than 90 per cent of "incidents" are within 50 metres of dumpsters or dumpster clusters.

To replace the dumpsters, the association suggests colour-coded bags with separated waste, and these will be picked up "several times a day."

By eliminating dumpsters, Downtown Vancouver could seriously clean up its alleys, possibly reducing its prevalence of panhandling, drug use, drug dealing, and "problem street person interactions."
