Sam Sullivan Lobbies For Relocation of Federal Institutions

samsullivan-federal.jpg

Some national institutions may be moving to Vancouver before you know it. It seems that the federal government is interested in moving some of its agencies outside of Ottawa, asking nine Canadian cities to put together a proposal for why their respective communities would be appropriate for some of these relocated institutions.

Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan is making the case for moving the Portrait Gallery of Canada to our fair city. In the coming weeks, he'll be working to put together a proposal for the federal government to review. The Portrait Gallery was originally supposed to be placed in a 1930s era building across the street from the House of Commons in Ottawa.

The other cities in the running for the Portrait Gallery of Canada are Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa-Gatineau, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and Halifax. The winner will be selected in nine months with completion expected by 2012.
