Sam Sullivan Bound to Beijing, Carries Olympic Torch

sullivan-torch.jpg

He was the one who received the Olympic flag in Torino, Italy after the close of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, receiving thousands of messages after waving that flag from his motorized wheelchair. In a short while, he will also be able to participate in the Olympic torch relay, but not exactly in the capacity that he once envisioned.

Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan is on his way to Beijing to catch the final leg of the 2008 Summer Olympics, but he will also be there to participate in the torch relay at the Paralympics next month, along with several Canadian athletes. Unfortunately for Sullivan, this may be his final official connection to the Olympic Games, because he will not be Vancouver's mayor when the Games arrive in 2010.

Sam Sullivan failed to receive the nomination from the civic NPA party, so it will definitely be a different Vancouver Mayor giving away the Olympic flag at the close of the 2010 Games.
