The Salvation Army just can't seem to catch a break. It was only a short while ago that the Vancouver warehouse suffered a devastating robbery, seeing thousands of dollars in toys stolen away, as well as lots of frozen food gone to waste. Now, the New Westminster thrift store has suffered a devastating blow in the form of a runaway bus.
A Coast Mountain bus apparently lost control, slamming into the side of the Salvation Army thrift store in New West just before 1 a.m. this morning. According to police reports, the driver of the bus had set the brakes and parked the vehicle next to the Skytrain station, but the brakes just didn't cut the mustard. The bus then proceeded to roll, smashing into several poles and signs before coming to a halt inside the Salvation Army store.
A full three-quarters of the public bus entered the building at 774 Columbia Street. Thankfully, no one on the street or in the store was hurt by the rogue empty bus. Damage to the building, not including repair costs for the bus, will cost about $100,000 to fix.
