Safe Injection Site Closure

safeinjectionsiteclosure.jpg

Even though there seems to a fair bit of public support for Insite, the government-sanctioned safe injection site located in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, it seems that the federal government is not so convinced. In fact, the Globe and Mail is reporting that "Ottawa is determined to shut down Vancouver's safe-injection site because it's necessary to 'draw a line' about which public health measures are acceptable."

The brunt of the objection comes because of the slippery slope argument. By providing a safe injection site, it's not that much more of a stretch to start providing the drugs themselves. Health Minister Tony Clement says that the government supports needle exchanges, but not a site to "facilitate the injection of illegal drugs." He says that this is "going too far."

"You have to draw the line somewhere and we feel we're drawing the line in a place Canadians are comfortable," said Clement. He is currently in Mexico City for the 17th International AIDS Conference.
