Retractable Roof Confirmed for BC Place Stadium

bcplacestadium-retractableroof.jpg

If you've been following the saga of the BC Place Stadium roof, you'll know that it has been quite the rocky road and we shouldn't expect very much to get confirmed by the government any time soon. Despite our hesitation, word is that Premier Gordon Campbell will be at an official media conference surrounding the future of the stadium's roof today.

As part of the media conference, the expectation is that the the provincial government will be backing the installation of a retractable roof. The trouble, however, is that this retractable roof will likely not be ready in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies. The timeframe is just too tight.

Another interesting tidbit is that the renovated BC Place Stadium could provide a new home (albeit possibly interim) for the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team. This could act as a "springboard" for the team to become a Major League Soccer franchise, playing in the same league as David Beckham and the LA Galaxy. Use of BC Place would be until the Whitecaps can secure their own stadium on the Vancouver waterfront.
