Restoring Canada's Oldest Vaudeville Theatre

vaudeville.jpg

The Downtown Eastside is a neighborhood that is known all too well for its poverty and drug problems. We should really be working to gentrify the area and after years of talk, at least one step is being pursued to make the area a little more attractive. Canada's oldest vaudeville theatre is located right here in Vancouver and it's about to get restored. At least we hope so.

The Pantages Theatre is located at 144 East Hastings, mere moments away from the infamous corner of Main and Hastings. Restoring the theatre, according to developer Marc Williams, would cost $26 million. One of the contingencies is that the City needs to approve a complex redevelopment plan that would call for a new building adjacent to the theatre. This new building would contain 136 units of social housing.

If the City of Vancouver approves the plan set forth by Williams, then construction -- which will take 12 to 18 months -- can start in December. Given this timeline, the theatre could be ready for the 2010 Games.
