Raw Oyster Warning in Effect

rawoyster.jpg

The Globe and Mail is reporting that Vancouver restaurants will now have to "tell customers about the dangers of eating uncooked shellfish." It is not a requirement, but Vancouver Coastal Health is heavily encouraging Vancouver eateries to "display cards warning consumers about the risk of illness associated with eating raw oysters and to include an advisory or label in their menus."

While it is widely known that fully cooking food is the only real way to eliminate potential bacterial or viral infection, anyone who has ever enjoyed some fantastic freshly shucked oysters -- Malpeque oysters are my personal favorite -- will tell you that a cooked oyster just isn't as tasty or satisfying.

It's interesting that the warning was issued in Vancouver, given that our town is particularly well known for top-notch seafood. This includes not only raw oysters, but what about all the sushi and sashimi that we consume?
