Proposed Developments in East Vancouver

main_street.jpg

I received a letter from the City of Vancouver a few days ago, outlining some new plans for my neighbourhood. There is a lot of development going on in our city, but most of these are simply for private residential purchase. This letter was something quite different altogether.

There is a subsidized living complex on Main Street in Vancouver, roughly between 33rd and 37th Avenue. This complex has been here for a number of years, providing wide open park spaces for children to play in, and as well as subsidized housing for low-income families. In fact, over 200 families call this complex home. Under the proposed plan, all of these families would be temporarily relocated to other subsidized housing. This is so that they can completely revamp the area, tearing down all existing buildings, and replacing them with several new ones.

The new complex would consist of subsidized housing units (providing enough room for the same number of families as today), private residential units available for purchase, and commercial retail space. This is designed to maximize the use of the land and to provide "sustainable living." This is still very much in the early planning stages. More information can be found by asking BC Housing.
